About Us
The Shop
Vance's Bicycle World opened on April 1, 1998 in the Sunset Plaza. In July of 2007 we purchased our
new building at 2200 S Prairie Ave and opened there on October first of 2007. We are approaching the
ten year mark now and in that time have added a variety of new bicycle makes, models, and colors
since our original opening.
The Workers
Vance
Vance has always had a passion for bicycles. He got his first bike, a purple Sears
Spyder, at age five. Through the years he rode different types of BMX bicycles. At
age 18, he broke the World Almanac's 1982 bunny hop record by hopping 41 inches.
He returned the next year in 1984 and broke his own record jumping 41 1/2 inches.
Vance held the record for three years before someone tied the record. He is featured
in the World Almanac in 1983. Vance was involved in many mountain bike races.
It was in 2000 that he started Vance's Bicycle World Bike Racing Team, in which he usually placed in
the top ten. In 1999, Vance won the National Bicycling League State Champion. Vance is very active in
raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In 2005, Vance rode two JDRF Ride to
Cure rides; one in Asheville, NC and Death Valley, CA. In 2006, served either as a cyclist, coach, or
mechanic for the JDRF rides in Carmel, CA, Santa Rosa, CA, Whitefish, MT, Asheville, NC, and Death
Valley, CA. He and the other Colorado riders raised more than $60,000 for the Barbara Davis Center
for Childhood Diabetes in Denver, where his daughter Brandy goes for treatment. Vance has officially
served as a Level 3 USA Cycling Coach.
Vance can generally be found in the shop all the time. He works on the bikes, takes care of customers,
orders parts, and does a great deal of the merchandising and pricing.
Judi
Judi is Vance's wife, but prefers to be called Judi. She graduated
CSU-Pueblo in 1998 with a Bachelor's in Business Management. She is the
"accountant" of the shop, as she handles all the finances, takes care of
payroll (therefore, we're all really nice to her), inventory, and doing all the
paperwork type things. She spends most of the day answering phone calls,
working on the computer, and assisting customers. Off the record, she also
spends most of the day on Matchbox 20 forums. One of her pet peeves is
when people shift the gears on the bikes while they aren't pedaling.
Brandy
Brandy is Vance and Judi's daughter, but prefer's Brandy over "Vance's
daughter" and "hey you!". She will be finishing up high school in a few months
and will be spending more time at the shop. She helps out by cleaning display
cases, helping customers, and running the register.
Jonathan
"Hi, Ive had the pleasure of riding bikes for the last 21 years and wrenching
on them for 14. I primarily enjoy riding mountain, road, touring, and my
townie single speed bikes. I have a real fond place in my heart for any crazy
bike project, townie bike, or old school Schwinn restoration. I mainly wrench
on bikes but often times help with sales and special orders. I enjoy chatting
about the latest bike specs or anything bike. I look forward to helping you in
the future and helping your bike dreams come true."
Thomas
Thomas began working at the shop in September of 2007 as he recently moved
here from Kentucky. He is the designer of this website and also the Southern
Colorado Trail Builders website. He helps with customers and can do some of the
minor mechanic work.
Thumper
Thumper is the unofficial mascot of the shop. He's older then the shop (and
maybe you), and has his smelly moments, but we all love him.
